Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Indigenous language radio has emerged as a powerful tool for promoting literacy development in rural and marginalized communities in Nigeria. In Fufore Local Government Area, Adamawa State, where many residents speak indigenous languages, radio programs broadcast in these languages have been instrumental in enhancing literacy skills, particularly among the illiterate and semi-literate populations (Aliyu & Musa, 2023; Usman & Shehu, 2024). Indigenous language radio provides an accessible and culturally relevant platform for delivering educational content that resonates with local audiences, thereby contributing to literacy development. This study seeks to assess the impact of indigenous language radio on literacy development in Fufore, focusing on its role in improving reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of indigenous language radio in promoting literacy, there is limited research on its specific impact on literacy development in Fufore LGA. While indigenous language radio programs are broadcast regularly, challenges such as low levels of educational content, lack of qualified presenters, and limited community involvement may affect their effectiveness in promoting literacy. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how indigenous language radio in Fufore has contributed to literacy development and identifying factors that enhance or hinder its success.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the content and strategies used in indigenous language radio programs aimed at promoting literacy in Fufore LGA.
2. To evaluate the impact of indigenous language radio on literacy development in Fufore LGA.
3. To identify challenges and opportunities in using indigenous language radio to promote literacy development in Fufore LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. What content and strategies are employed in indigenous language radio programs to promote literacy in Fufore LGA?
2. How does indigenous language radio impact literacy development in Fufore LGA?
3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using indigenous language radio to promote literacy development in Fufore LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Indigenous language radio significantly contributes to literacy development in Fufore LGA.
2. The effectiveness of indigenous language radio in promoting literacy development varies across different demographic groups in Fufore LGA.
3. Challenges such as inadequate educational content and low community participation affect the success of indigenous language radio in promoting literacy.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of indigenous language radio in improving literacy rates in rural communities. By focusing on Fufore LGA, the research contributes to the understanding of how media can be leveraged to enhance education in marginalized regions of Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the impact of indigenous language radio on literacy development in Fufore Local Government Area, Adamawa State. It does not include other forms of media or regions.
